Crafters Home - Crafters Listing - Craft Shows - Articles - Message Board
We are living in an electronic age where everything from shopping, paying bills or even researching family history can be done online. It seems like everyone has a website, why don't you? A website is a great way of getting valuable information and images to customers, a point of contact for customer service and a means of making additional sales. Even if the site is basic with minimal information all business should have them, even crafters! A simple one page site could include your address, information about your craft and how you got started, pictures and locations where your products are available. If you are concerned about price or how difficult it is to set up and maintain a website, there are companies who will let you set up a site for free. Two that I have tried were GeoCities and Angelfire. They are both free and fairly simple to use. The downsides to sites like these are the long URLs or web addresses, and banner advertisements and pop up windows. Your customers are not going to remember an address that long, and everyone is annoyed by pop ups. Another option is to get your own domain name and go through a hosting service. This will cost some money, and a lot of time to research building your own website. There are a lot of positive sides to this option including a shorter address, no pop ups and getting email address with your domain name. Catalog.com is a great company for hosting, they are not expensive, will search for domain availability and have a great support staff. But you will have to build your site from scratch, and this maybe very time consuming. There are programs you can get that will take most of the pain out of this process, such as Microsoft Front Page. This program is very similar to Microsoft Word and will publish your pages directly to you site for you. The final option is also the most expensive, hiring a company to do everything for you. With this, you get a professional looking site, but may be limited to making a certain amount of updates a month. This is the most convenient way to get a website, but could also get extremely expensive and not too many crafters can afford it. No matter how you get it done, or how fancy the page looks everyone should have a website. So do it yourself the simple and free way, hire someone to do it for you or take the time to set one up and get it hosted, but make sure your homemade crafts have a home on the world wide web.
